Hello My Friends,
On this particular not-so-big-deal birthday, I paused to think about the gifts I received that didn’t cost anything, and that I have come to realize are, actually, the real big deal. I thought about the tradition of gift giving and what it represents. On a basic level, we give gifts on certain occasions, because it’s customary. However, underlying that custom is an important purpose: appreciation. We give people gifts to show them that we are grateful for them and value the role they play in our lives.
Inspired by the unconditional love of my wonderful family, friends and community of followers, I’d like to share what made my otherwise insignificant birthday the most significant one yet. This birthday, I showed my appreciation to the people around me in a handwritten note that tells them why I appreciate them. Not for what they do for me. Not for what they help me accomplish. Not even for what they accomplish themselves. Just for being who they are.
In my notes, I didn’t go into great details about everything I appreciate about each person. This is a gift. There’s no reason to hoard my appreciation; it’s unlimited in supply. I simply described one thing about them that makes me smile. Something I admire. Something that makes them special to me. In the hope that when they read it, it will warm their hearts and bring a smile to their faces as well.
Thoughtful acts of kindness affect the giver, the receiver and the community around us. Not just for the duration of the act, but for some time after. The intentions of these gestures spark inspiration for others to perform similar acts and be part of a world changing cycle which is infinite in nature.
This birthday, I can’t imagine feeling any more appreciated, respected, and loved. I would like to express my appreciation for each and every one of you for your unwavering support and dedication. When you share your stories of how my designs impacted your life, in even the smallest way, it fills my heart with joy and inspires me to continue to create. You are my inspiration to continue doing what I love and for that I am forever grateful.
