Pearls Are the Oldest Gemstones Known to Man

It is believed that pearls were first used as jewelry around 5,000 years ago by the ancient Sumerians. Since then, they've been highly prized and coveted across many cultures throughout history. The oldest known pearl necklace was found in Ancient Egypt, and dates back over 4,500 years!

Not All Pearls Are Created Equal

While some pearls are natural and created by oysters in the wild, most modern pearls are actually “cultured” or farmed in an oyster farm. Cultured pearls can be found in freshwater or saltwater settings and come in different shapes, sizes, colors, and qualities depending on their origin.

Different Pearl Colors Represent Different Meanings

In different cultures around the world, pearl colors often carry a symbolic meaning behind them. For example; white symbolizes purity and innocence while pink symbolizes love and romance. Black pearls represent strength while blue ones represent wisdom or truth.

The Most Expensive Pearl Is Called ‘La Peregrina’

La Peregrina is a large drop-shaped pearl which was discovered by slave fishermen off the coast of Panama in 1513. It was bought by King Phillip II of Spain for his queen Mary I (aka Mary Tudor) who wore it frequently during her reign until her death in 1558 when it passed on to other royals throughout Europe including Napoleon Bonaparte's second wife Marie Louise who gave it to her son as a wedding present in 1846! Today La Peregrina is owned by Elizabeth Taylor who purchased it at auction for $37,000 USD in 1969 – what an amazing investment!

Symbol of Wealth & Prestige

Not only are pearls beautiful and timeless, but they were also often seen as symbols of wealth and prestige throughout history. In fact, until relatively recently, only royalty was allowed to own them! Today, however, anyone can own a pearl without breaking their bank account—though they’re still largely considered a sign of luxury.
